Princess Twilight Sparkle by SynCallio Princess Twilight Sparkle by SynCallio
Here's a stab at alicorn!Twilight, maybe some years from now. I tried to come up with a nice blend of regal princess-ness and Twilight's characteristics. Like giving her a swoopy mane that still has that squared-off shape to it.

It still surprises me that the main color in Twilight's mane and tail is more blue than purple. I have to think of it as "indigo" to get it right.

Edit: Please see this lovely vectored version by :iconjazzlovessilkies:! She did a great job.

You did pretty good.  I really do like it.  And did you sketch this out with pencil first or did you use colored pencils all the way?  Because it's hard to use colored pencils from the start, or else you might mess up and have to start over.

I sketched it out first. Actually, I sketched on a different piece of paper and then traced a faint pencil outline on a clean sheet (of nicer paper) to do the color version. Yeah, Prismacolors don't erase well!

I've actually got some Prismacolors, so I know what you're talking about.  And it's amazing how well you got Twi's colors down.  And with the tracing, you most likely used a lightboard (a case with a light inside so you could see what you're tracing), or just really paid attention to the piece under the fresh paper, correct me if I'm wrong.  I just have a sketchbook with 5.5 x 8.25 inch paper and I have some printer paper, but If I do the printer paper first, the image probably won't go inside my sketchbook too well so I wouldn't be able to trace it in lighter pencil strokes.  And if I do the sketchbook first, I can only get the image on one side of the printer paper.  And I don't really want to waste printer paper.  Got any ideas for me?

I did use a lightbox. Well, technically, I rigged up a makeshift lightbox using an old picture frame, some cardboard, tape, glue, and a desk lamp. If you'd like a diagram, I could do that. :-) Those professional lightboxes ain't cheap.

Does your sketchbook not have perforated pages? Mine does, so I can tear the sheets out neatly. Sketchbook paper takes color better than printer paper, and printer paper is way cheaper, so I use the printer paper for sketches, and color the final piece on sketchbook paper. You could always cut sheets out of your sketchbook with scissors, but that's up to you.

Actually, mine doesn't.  It's a Watson Guptill, and the paper is archival quality, so it's pretty smooth and even a bit slick at times, but it takes color very well.  I had an old sketchbook that had perforated edge paper, but that has kind of yellowish paper now that it's so old.  And I just don't have the resolve to move back to that, I just want to keep to my current one you know?  And one more thing, is your sketchbook pretty big?  And is it ring bound?  Mine is like a regular book, spine bound and glued so when i scan my drawings in, it will occasionally have a gradation in the center where the paper leaves the surface of the scanner, and if it's been wet and curled, it will show as blurred spots.

Even with those flaws it still comes out pretty good after I crop it in Paint and fix it up a bit in Photoshop.  I'm just a bit hesitant about cutting the pages because I have no clue where I would put them after I'm done with the drawing.  lol.

And the custom light box, that sounds pretty easy to make.  I've got some of those things in my house actually.   I might have to do some scrounging around for some glass to put inside the picture frame, but it could be worth it.

When I have to scan warped paper, I've been known to lean on the scanner lid, or rest a heavy book on it.

I've been thinking of getting a hanging file to keep my loose art in. Cardboard ones are pretty cheap, and there are some that are just wire frames, or that stack neatly in crates. That would let me organize them, too.

The picture frame already had glass in it.

She's beautiful! :squee: Wonderful work, I love it! You did have fun with the shading, didn't you? It looks good.

(Though, uh, I made a mistake in my drawing that seems to have translated: Her cutie mark is missing the little stars, and the white detail on the big star.)
