TARDIS in the Gardens

Description

Two submissions in a day! What is this madness??

Blame Doctor Who. This venerable sci-fi is turning 50 in a week: the first episode, "An Unearthly Child", first aired on the BBC on November 23rd, 1963. Eleven Doctors, thirty-three seasons, six sonic screwdrivers, and 797 episodes later, it's the biggest and most successful sci-fi franchise in existence.

It is also possibly the most British thing in existence. More British than tea (Asian), the House of Windsor (German), and the Union Flag (not "Union Jack", as Rose pointed out). Even that time it was co-produced by FOX, they filmed in Canada. Which is part of the Commonwealth.

So I went and drew the TARDIS parked in a setting inspired by Lauritzen Gardens, which is the local botanical garden. Because I like drawing trees, and there's this lovely bend in the road where you've got the bluff towering above you on the west and a 40-foot drop to the Missouri floodplain on the east, and suddenly you see the crooked little valley where the gardens are nestled, and it is terribly inviting, and so is the TARDIS.

Also, I wanted to draw the TARDIS somewhere I knew. 'Cause that's part of the fun, right? Part of the magic of the show: a familiar view, someplace you've seen a million times, in which is parked an inexplicable police box.

Done in ArtRage, using markers.
